The main objective of this guided way of learning is that students can progressively build cognitive structures and skills. And this would not be possible without a planned orientation and accompaniment of their educators. The scaffolding, therefore, aims to develop the self-regulatory capacity of students.

Considering it’s meaning and its objectives, the functions that scaffolding in the educational field fulfills are the following:

  • It provides help, support, information, guidance, support in learning, and homework.
  • It motivates learning and reduces stress and frustration in the face of the unknown or ambiguous.
  • It facilitates models of the approach of the contents that can be used with other later and new ones.
  • It allows for achieving objectives that could not be achieved autonomously. Children in science class, putting into practice their learning through scaffolding.

The Role Of The Educator In A Scaffolding Process In The Educational Field

We must not forget that in a learning process conceived of the need for scaffolding, the student is the main protagonist. However, the role of the educator is fundamental.

Thus, this way, it facilitates that your students can understand the contents significantly. Scaffolding can be the following:

  • Homework support introducing new materials considering their previous knowledge.
  • Motivation in the face of new challenges and learning.
  • Activities that reinforce, expand, introduce, clarify the knowledge that is intended to learn.
  • Various strategies to address the contents, both for reception, preparation, and production. We refer to concept maps, tables, images, summaries, tables, graphs, glossaries, timelines, schematics, etc.).

In short, what it is about is that the student learns by building their knowledge and that it is their teacher who accompanies and guides them in the way of learning.
